One of Our Own Killed

On December 2017 the daughter of a disgruntled tenant facing eviction shot and killed Danette Kane, the owner of Westview Manor apartments in the 2200 block of West 10th Avenue, and had earlier shot the apartment manager Michael Troy seriously injuring him with a gunshot wound to the head which has left him permanently blind! This shooting occurred at around 2:30 pm.

We wish to express our deepest sympathies to both families and wish Michael Tory a speedy recovery.

The suspect, a 23-year-old woman was later arrested and is in custody.  She has been charged with first-degree murder and her bond has been set at $1 million.

This incident again raises the question of landlord safety, issues that have been a serious concern with the entire real estate industry over the past few decades.

Recently one of our members reported an incident where when showing a rental, while in the basement area, the prospective tenant became unruly threatening the landlord.  She said, “I feared for my life!”

Your Landlord Association plans to continue highlighting safety recommendation online, in our newsletters and at upcoming membership meetings.  The low occupancy levels, overall housing shortages, and more homeless in our region has increased the need for more awareness of landlord/tenant safety concerns.

A few quick notes, whenever possible showings should be done in daylight hours and if only one person is involved try to have another person with you.  Always provide yourself with more than one exit.  More suggestions/recommendations will appear in this newsletter in the future.
